ENGINEERING PROJECTS BY STUDENTS
  
There is good news for young engineering talents at the Cochin University of Science and Technology.B.Tech students in the self-financing sector of the university will soon be recognised for their skills thanks to a proposal being included in the university budget for 2012-13. Lopus Mathew, convener of the finance standing committee of the Syndicate, said that the university would pick up the best projects in each engineering stream and provide incentives to the students who have worked behind them.The final semester project would be considered for the award. The best project in each branch of engineering, which is related to industry, will be given an award comprising a certificate and a cash prize of Rs.10,000. The modalities and criteria for identifying the best project will be finalised later, he said.
Prof. Mathew said that the university has done commendable work in stepping up its research activities. Thirty externally funded research projects worth Rs. 36.12 crore were taken up by various departments in 2011-12. This includes one unique and high-value project worth Rs. 19.98 crore awarded to the Department of Atmospheric Sciences for establishing a ‘Stratosphere Troposphere (ST) Radar' in Kochi, he said. The university had also received the sanction for additional assistance under 11 Five Year Plan for purchase of teaching aids and equipment (Rs.1 crore); starting a course in Master of Fisheries Science in ‘Seafood Safety & Trade' under ‘Innovative Programmes' (Rs. 50 lakh); and Development Assistance for Upgrading of Existing Management Department (Rs. 46 lakh).The university has constituted a committee to prepare proposals to be submitted before the University Grants Commission under the 12 Five Year Plan. Prof. Mathew said that the university expects at least three to five times hike in the financial support during the 12 Plan period.
