TREMENDOUS DECLINE IN READERSHIP OF BOOKS IN INDIA

TREMENDOUS DECLINE IN READERSHIP OF BOOKS IN INDIA
Eminent scientist C.N.R. Rao has cautioned the younger generations against substituting the habit of reading books with the latest forms of technology. Dr. Rao, the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, was inaugurating the first International Book Fair (INBOFA 1012), that is being organised by Mahatma Gandhi University, on Friday,13th January,2012.. He pointed out that there has been a tremendous decline in the readership of books in India in recent times. Most people belonging to the younger generations no longer read books. Instead, they confine themselves to using laptops, internet and other forms of technology. Moreover, online libraries like Wikipedia are wrongly being considered as reliable sources of information. The situation is worryingly the same in research field, in which many students no longer read research papers. They depend almost completely upon the computer.
Dr. Rao also voiced concern on the fact that India lagged far behind developed countries in terms of writing books on the various topics of science. This is an unfortunate trend as it (book writing) is supposed to be a way of placing India on a high pedestal in the field of science.
