MULLAPERIYAR- KERALA LEADERS CRITICISE KARUNANIDHI’S DEMAND

MULLAPERIYAR-
KERALA LEADERS CRITICISE
KARUNANIDHI’S DEMAND

Political parties in Kerala have unanimously spoken against the new demand by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK supremo M Karunanidhi that Devikulam and Peerumedu in Idukki district, where the Mullaperiyar dam is situated, should be annexed that state.Reacting to the statement, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committe president Ramesh Chennithala told UNI, 'The statement by Mr Karunanidhi is totally baseless as it is nothing but a political gimmic.' He said the Kerala government was not against providing water to Tamil Nadu and it was committed to giving the required quanatity from the new dam also.

It was uncessary on the part of the DKM leader to raise the issue 55 years after the formation of the state, he said.Though Kerala was giving water for agricultural purpose, Tamil Nadu was also producing electricity, but Kerala had Kerala no onbjection to this.
Water Resources Minister P J Joseph today condemned the reported remarks of Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Planning Ashwani Kumar that the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar dam was safe.Reacting to the statements, he told UNI that as a responsible Minister he should not make such an irresponsible statement on the issue, as many experts in the field were studying about the safety of the century-old dam.''His statement is not justifiable and I will take the matter to Defence Minister A K Antony,'' he added. Mr Joseph wondered on what basis he (Mr Kumar) made the remark and from where he got information about the safety of the dam as various studies were going on on the issue.Union Minister Mr Kumar has said in New Delhi that the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar dam was safe.
