GERMAN TECHNOLOGY PROPOSED FOR NEW BRAHMAPURAM WASTE-TREATMENT PLANT
The Suchitwa Mission has recommended setting up at Brahmapuram a mega plant capable of processing about 500 tonnes of municipal solid waste generated daily in Kochi corporation areas and nearby municipalities.Experts associated with the mission told The Hindu on Monday that the plant will work on a German technology known as ‘ecocycling'.Ecocycling is a cold mineralisation process where waste is torn apart and molecules are encapsulated in the resultant silicate structure. The waste is transformed into a mineral called C.M500, a non-toxic product suitable for various applications in the construction and agriculture sectors. Household waste, including plastic, is put through a huge shredder and reduced to small pieces about 10 cm in size. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are separated before the waste goes through a grinder to reduce it even further, they said.
The ecocycle process grinds trash down into tiny particles, mixes it with hazardous waste, locks it all together with an additive and pumps it out as very fine pellets of non-waste material. Household waste, toxic waste and industrial waste could be turned in to clean and reusable materials using this technology.Officials at the Mission said that the price of an ecocycle plant is nearly 90 per cent cheaper than an incinerator. It also requires around one-tenth the temperature of incineration about a mere 120 degree Celsius. The proposed technology ensures that there is no foul smell emanating from the plant besides checking the leakage of leachate. The Mission has prepared a list of technology providers who could offer scientific solutions to the garbage menace in the State. The new Brahmapuram plant is among the three regional solid waste treatment plants proposed to be built shortly using a new technology. The other two plants were proposed to be built in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.
