ROAD ACCIDENT DEATHS
(2132 road accident deaths in 6 months, Thrissur tops with 276)-2011

A total of 2,132 people were killed in road accidents in the state during the last 6 months. Statistics show that there were 17, 912 accident cases from January 1 to June 30. As per the statistics prepared by the state police department, more death occurred in Thrissur –276. 56 people died in Thrissur urban limit and 220 in rural areas. The death rate crossed 200 in Ernakulam (267), Thiruvananthapuram (235), Alappuzha (200), Palakkad (208) districts too. The victims were between 22 and 55. The main reasons that led to accidents were the new model vehicles, overspeeding, drunken driving and careless driving. The report says among the 17,912 accident cases, 17,402 were caused due to reckless driving. 49 accidents were caused due to drunken driving. In Thiruvananthapuram, 36 cases were registered for drunken driving. In Idukki and Wayanad districts the death rates are below 40.

Many accidents occurred in Ernakulam –2695. As many as 11, 892 bike riders met with accident. The accidents due to KSRTC buses are 673 and due to private buses 1952.There were 1186 accidents due to lorries, 3553 by auto, 6706 by car, jeep, and mini lorry. Majority of accidents occurred during daytime, ie.. 13, 273 and during night it was 4,644. 12, 872 are seriously injured and 8,124 suffered minor injuries.
