NEW DAM TO BE NAMED
’ KERALA-PERIYAR DAM'
The expert committee, which has been conducting studies for a new dam, has forwarded the suggestion to name the new dam as `Kerala Periyar new dam'. Earlier, there was suggestion to give different names to the new dam, which is being constructed at the foot of the existing dam.
The new dam would be constructed 336 meters below the existing dam in two parts of 507 meter wide and 158 meter height. The place was approved by both Tamil Nadu and Kerala during the survey in 1979. Further proceedings were stopped in 1980 when the central government passed a new forest act. In 2010 Kerala sought the permission of Union Environment and forest ministry to conduct a primary level survey. Later they approved the place after conducting examination in the proposed area.
