The Opposition Left Democratic Front will form a ‘Human Wall’ from Mullapeiryar to Kochi on Thursday,8th December,2011, as part of the campaign to put the issue in perspective, demanding the construction of a new dam which would ensure security to the people of Kerala and water to the people of Tamil Nadu. Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday,6th December,, LDF convener Vaikom Viswan said the Central and State governments were dilly dallying on the issue which needed strong measures and the LDF would present people from all walks of life in the campaign demanding strong measures for the new dam. The ‘Human Wall’ will start from Mullapeiryar and reach the boundary of Idukki district at Neenda Paara via Vandiperiyar and Chappath. In Ernakulam the Wall will be held at Neryamangalam,Kothamangalam, Perumbavoor and reach Kochi Marine Drive where it would culminate in a public meeting.
At Mullaperiyar, CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, E P Jayarajan, K E Ismael, Benoy Viswom, N K Premachandran, and others would join the Wall. The campaign will commence after the ‘sopana sangeetham recital on Mullaperiyar by Hari Govindan. At Perumbavoor, Philipose Mar Chrysostum , senior metropolitan of Mar Thoma Church and Archbishop Stephen Vattappara of the Anglican Church of India are expected to join the Wall. The public meeting at Marine Drive will be addressed by the Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan, V R Krishna Iyer, M K Sanu, M Leelavathy, film personalities Renjith, Kamal, Sibi Malayil and others. The Wall will commence by 4 pm and conclude 15 minutes later. This will be followed by public meetings in select places. Participants would arrive at the spot by 3 pm and the first rehearsal will be held at 3:30 pm.
Reacting to a question the LDF convener said there was reason to suspect the sincerity of the Advocate General on the basis of his deposition before the Kerala High Court on the Mullaperiyar issue. The deposition would be a handy tool with the critics of Kerala’s stand on the issue, he said. To another question, he said that one could not rule out the issue being taken up during the forthcoming by- election at Piravom as it was a clear example to illustrate the contrasting stance taken by the two coalitions on people’s issues.
