DIABETES-
MAJOR CAUSE FOR KIDNEY AILMENTS
Unchecked diabetes is fast becoming a major cause for high incidence of kidney ailments in the capital and elsewhere in the State, senior nephrologists assert. This trend is also reflected in the fact that roughly 80 per cent of patients who are on dialysis are diabetics too, indicating a need to spread awareness on the link between the two. These and many other issues that impact the rise of kidney related ailments are expected to figure in the annual conference of Indian Society of Nephrology (ISN) ‘ISNCON 2011', starting this Friday, December 9.
“Roughly, every year, two lakh new kidney patients are being identified in the country and close to 10,000 cases in the State,” organising secretary, ISNCON and senior Nephrologist, Dr. Pradeep Deshpande said.Close to 900 delegates are expected to participate in the three-day conference between December 9 and 11 at HICC, Madhapur. A pre-conference workshop on acute renal failure, live demonstration, exhibition on the history of dialysis and demonstration Continues Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) will be held on Thursday, December 8 at HICC. The conference will feature senior international faculty on kidney ailments from the University of Colorado, USA, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, Brigham's and Women's Hospital, Boston and University of California, USA, Joint Organising Secretary, ISNCON and Head of NIMS Nephrology Department K.
