YOUNG WORLD QUIZ-2011
The 12th edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz which kicked off in Madurai on October 19 will be held here from 2 p.m. on Friday at A.J. Hall, Kaloor. This year, the annual event is being held across 16 centres including Trichy, Coimbatore, Salem, Chennai, Puducherry, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mangalore, Hubli and Kochi to culminate in a grand finale in Thiruvananthapuram on November 14.
The contest is open to students from Classes VII to IX in teams of two and a school can send as many as four teams. The Hindu will meet the cost of the travel, boarding, and lodging of the teams and for one accompanying parent or teacher from the other centres for the Grand Finale in Thiruvananthapuram. As in the previous years, eminent quiz master V.V. Ramanan will host the show and bombard the participants with questions from varied topics such as epics, history, films, music and science. Six teams for the regional finals will be selected through a written quiz. The winning team from each region will be qualified for the grand finale.
The participants are requested to report at the venue by 1 p.m. on Friday with their entry cards. Those schools which have sent entries but have not got intimation from this newspaper because of postal delay can also directly register at the venue on Friday. The regional winners of the event will bag Rs.15,000 as the first prize, Rs.12,000 as the second and Rs.10,000 as the third prize. The winners of the fourth, fifth and sixth positions will be given Rs.2,000 each. The prize money for the winner in the grand finale will be Rs. 50,000 while the second prize carries Rs. 40,000 and the third prize Rs. 30,000. The fourth, fifth and sixth places will carry Rs. 10,000 each. In addition, a large number of other prizes in kind have been lined up for participants and the audience too. Above all, the families of the two participants in the winning team in the Grand Finale at Thiruvananthapuram will get a Tata Nano Car as bonus.
Velammal Educational Trust is the title sponsor of the event while Extramarks Education Pvt. Ltd. and Indian Overseas Bank are the associate sponsors.
