NALAPPAT BALAMANI AMMA
Nalappat Balamani Amma (19 July 1909 – 29 September 2004) was a Malayali poetess. Considered by many to be one of the best Malayali poetess, she won the highest literary medal in India, the Saraswathi Samman. She was married to former managing editor of the widely-circulated Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi, V.M. Nair. She is the mother of the renowned writer Kamala Das who has translated one of her mother's poems, "The Pen", which describes the loneliness of a mother. Malayalam poetess Balamaniamma died on Wednesday 29th September,2004 afternoon, her family sources said.She was 95 and was ailing for some time.Known as 'Grandmother' of Malayalam literature, Balamaniamma died at her daughter's residence.She was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1978.Balamani Amma is a famous poetess in Malayalam language. Balamani Amma,for her great works,was given several awards including Saraswati Samman, Padma Bhushan award & Ezhuthachan award respectively. Padma Bhushan award is the highest civilian award given in India. Padmabhushan Naalappat Balamani Amma popularly known as Balamani Amma (19th July 1909 – 29th September 2004) was a Malayali poet. She is often called as the grandmother of Malayalam literature. She was the mother of the famous writer Kamala Das. She had written 500 poems and had received the nation’s highest literary award Saraswathi Samman. Her famous poetry collections are Nivedyam, Sopaanam and Lokantharangalil.
