TRIBUTE PAID TO KERALA MINISTER T.M JACOB
Jacob: the man who fought many political battles

T.M. Jacob, who died on Sunday night,30th October,2011, had led the Kerala Congress-Jacob and was its sole legislator. He was ailing for some time and was in and out of hospital since he became a minister this May.Making his maiden entry into the assembly in 1977 from the Piravam constituency in Ernakulam district, he won every election till 2001.At the 2006 assembly polls, Jacob lost the elections for the first time but came back in the 2011 assembly polls.He first became a minister in the K. Karunakaran cabinet on two occasions, 1982-1987 and then 1991-1995.Then he became a minister in the A.K. Antony cabinet on two occasions, first from 1995-1996 and then again from 2001-04. But he was dropped when Chandy became the chief minister replacing Antony in 2004.

Jacob, for a brief while in 2005, dissolved his party and merged with the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran formed by Karunakaran after leaving Congress. But after his defeat in the 2006 assembly polls, he re-launched his own party and again became an ally of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).The ongoing assembly session is most likely to adjourn for the day after paying tributes to Jacob.With the death of Jacob, the strength of the UDF has come down from 72 seats to 71 in the 140 member 

 assembly.
    Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister T.M. Jacob, who died of multiple organ failure at a private hospital here on Sunday, was laid to rest with full State honours at his home town Piravom in Ernakulam district on Tuesday.Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his cabinet colleagues led by Finance Minister K.M. Mani attended the solemn ceremony at the Kakkoor St. Mary’s Jacobite church, where the body was brought this morning. Jacobite church head Catholicos Baselious Thomas I led the funeral services.Cutting across political affiliation, leaders and party workers paid their last respects to Jacob as his body was brought to Piravom from Kochi. After the church services, the body was draped in the tricolour and a 21 gun salute accorded before it was laid to rest at the church cemetery.Jacob’s 81-year-old mother Annamma, his wife, son and daughter were also present.

The Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader was under treatment for pulmonary hypertension and was hospitalised a few days ago. Jacob was active in Kerala politics for more than three decades and had handled education and irrigation portfolios in the previous UDF governments headed by K Karunakaran and A K Antony. Widely recognised as an able administrator and skilled legislator, he entered politics as an activist of the Kerala Congress' student wing in the 1960s. He served as the general secretary of the Kerala Congress Students (KSC) wing and later became president of the youth wing. Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan also expressed grief over the death. In a message, Karthikeyan said in the passing away of Jacob, Kerala has lost an effective legislator and a very good administrator who had proved his ability over the years.    The Nair Service Society (NSS) has condoled the death of Food and Civil Supplies Minister T.M. Jacob. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair said that Jacob was a personality who had remained as an efficient parliamentarian, a strong administrator, an efficient politician, and an eloquent speaker for nearly four decades in the political arena of the state.His virtues of careful analysis of matters, presenting facts clearly, and imparting knowledge among others were ones that are uncommon. His demise is an irreplaceable loss for the state, Mr. Nair said.
Jacob, who had served the state as a minister in four governments, was rated as one of the best ministers. His tenure as education minister during the K. Karunakaran government, between 1982 and 87 was eventful. During this term, he introduced the concept of Pre-degree board with an aim to delink 11th and 12th standard from colleges. Steps such as privatization of technical education were also initiated by Jacob during this period. He had also served in the ministries led by K. Karunakaran and A.K. Antony between 1991 and 1996 and in the A.K. Antony ministries of 2001. Apart from education, he had handled Water Resources and Food and Civil Supplies portfolios.Jacob made a political gamble in 2005 by dissolving his party and merging with the Democratic Indira Congress floated by K. Karunakaran. Later, he quit the DIC and gave a rebirth to Kerala Congress (Jacob). Jacob was the mastermind of Oommen Chandy government's flagship project for distributing rice at Re 1/kg for BPL families.Kerala Assembly Monday adjourned without transacting any business as a mark of respect to Food Minister and Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader T M Jacob, who passed away Sunday night. As the house assembled, Speaker G Karthikeyan formally informed the members about the demise of Jacob, and adjourned the house immediately. The house will pay homage to Jacob on Wednesday after his funeral tomorrow. Meanwhile, Governor M O H Farook condoled the death of Jacob, saying Kerala had lost a seasoned politician, efficient parliamentarian and able administrator whose contributions would be remembered forever.
Expressing a deep sense of shock and bereavement over the demise of Kerala's Food and Civil Supplies Minister T.M. Jacob, Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan Monday said he lost a long-time friend.Jacob died Sunday night at a private hospital in Kochi at the age of 61. Describing Jacob as one of those outstanding parliamentarians who dominated the public life of Kerala for over four decades, Sankaranarayanan said: 'At a young age, he became a legislator, worked with the youth wing of the Kerala Congress and won several elections on the strength of his sustained good work.''I had the privilege of working with him in two ministries,' Sankaranarayanan said in a statement.'Jacob was a very good personal friend of mine. In his demise, Kerala has lost a popular leader and I have lost a close friend,' he added.Jacob, who led the Kerala Congress-Jacob and was its sole legislator, was ailing for some time and was in and out of hospital since he became a minister this May.
 Among the parliamentarians produced by the State, the late Mr. Jacob had prime position, said K.C. Joseph, Minister for Culture, in his condolence message. In his message, K.V. Thomas, Union Minister of State for Food, said that Mr. Jacob's death marked a great loss to the democratic institutions. He took the initiative to implement the ‘rice for Re.1' scheme that was part of the 100-day programme, Mr. Thomas said.
A release issued by Janata Dal (United) recalled that Mr. Jacob was a noted administrator.  Shadkala Govinda Marar Kalasamithi of Ramamangalam lost a patron by the death of Mr. Jacob, said K. Jayachandran Nair, secretary of the Samithi. The international book festival committee also expressed its condolences on the death of Mr. Jacob. The political parties and organisations that condoled his death include the Bharatiya Janata Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Janata Dal (United), and Kerala School Teachers' Front. The State committee of the teachers' front said that its Kerala formation day programme scheduled for Tuesday at Thiruvananthapuram had been postponed in view of Mr. Jacob's death.
     Kurakar cultural forum arranged a condolence meeting at Kurakar Town Center,Kottarakara on 2nd November,2011. Prof. John Kurakar Presided over the condolence meeting. Prof. Varghese John, Prof.Molly Kurakar, Mr. Sam Kurakar, Rev. Fr. O.Thomas, Dr Jose Kutty, Dr Balakrishnan, Mr.Bobby Kurakar were spoke on the meeting. 
  Mar Ivanious College,Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday,3rd November,2011 to commemorate T.M Jacob,who was an alumnus of the Mar Ivanious College. Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Church Baselios Clemis presided over the commemoration function. The Catholicos said that T.M Jacob was a man who valued personal relationships. Kerala had lost a great leader and the college a good former student in his demise.
