RESEARCHERS NEED SOCIAL COMMITMENT

The researchers should produce not just theses but also socially committed scholars, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala A. Jayakrishnan has said.He was speaking at a ceremony organised on the university campus at Kariavattom on Saturday to felicitate those who had received doctoral degrees from the university in 2010. As many as 236 scholars had received doctorates in various subjects from the university last year. This includes the MLA from Kanjirappally N. Jayaraj. The maximum number of doctoral degrees, 21, were in Physics, followed by 17 in Hindi, and 16 in Biotechnology.
Each scholar should continuously refine himself through the process of research. They should challenge old ideas, put forward new ones, and see whether they were of use to the people. Research should not just be used to further one's career, he said. In his presidential remarks, Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) E.D. Jemmis said only a truthful approach to research would enable a scholar to arrive at objective conclusions. Syndicate members and university officials were among those who were present. Former University student and member of the gold medal-winning Kabadi team at the Asian games Sharmi Ulahannan was felicitated by the university on the occasion. She was given a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh.
