MAN KILLED IN LANDSLIP IN IDUKKI

MAN KILLED IN LANDSLIP IN IDUKKI

One person was killed and another went missing in a landslip at Vedikkavala in Vannappuram grama panchayat in Idukki district on Monday, 17th, October, 2011, evening. The body of Thuruthel Thomas, 55, was recovered some distance from his house by evening. The house was swept away around 4 p.m. There was heavy rain in the region from afternoon. The police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel, with the help of local people, continued late into the evening the search for Annamma, 54, wife of Thomas. It is suspected that she is trapped in a rocky area which was flooded in the landslip.

A team of officials, led by District Collector E. Devadasan, was camping in the area to oversee the rescue operations, which were initially hampered by the remoteness of the area, surrounded by forests. An official of the Disaster Management Cell, who reached the spot, said that a final picture of the damage would be available in a day. The district had seen heavy rains, which destroyed crops and houses, for the past two days. On Sunday, about 50 acres of land and four roads were washed away in five landslips near Kokkayar in Mundakkayam.
