A MOTHER WITH PASSION FOR BIRDS

Shibi Maomas is a housewife. But what makes her different is her passion towards birds and bird nests. Shibi from Chakkala, Puthupally, has a collection of different kinds of bird nests which are symbols of perfect motherhood and warmth. From her childhood days, she was attracted to birds and nature and later her love made her an ornithologist. Shibi who studied only up to pre degree, was gifted with a bird's nest 18 years ago by a family friend. Her friend gifted her the nest considering her immense love for birds.

That was the beginning of her journey as Shibi began to collect nests abandoned by birds. Majority of the birds use to abandon the nest after their eggs hatch and build new nests. At present she has a collection of as many as 60 birds. Shibi said she had stopped collecting nests due to difficulties in searching and keeping the same. Shibi is a member of Kottayam nature society and also takes classes during seminars arranged by the society for school and college students.  She also wrote two books, `Daivathinte Swantham Pakshikal' after watching small birds in her locality. The next book is `Vembanad Neerpakshikal' . Society members Dr Sreekumar and Dr Unnikrishnan helped her in the task.
