 Nalanda University,in Bihar, was a Buddhist centre of learning from the fifth to the sixth cenntury to 1197. It was alled" One of the first great universities in recorded history" the Gupta Empire patronised some of the monasteries. The university flourished in the reign of Sakraditya and was supported by the patronage of Buddhist emperors like Harsha. The complex was built with red bricks and its ruins occupy an area of 14 hectares. At its peal, the university attracted scholars and students from as far away as China, Greece and Persia. At its peak, the university attracted scholars and students from as far away as China, Grece and Persia. Nalanda was ransacked and destroyed by Turkic Muslim invaders under Bakhtiyar Khalji in 1193. The great library of Nalanda University was so  vast that it is reported to have burned for three months after invaders set fire to it, ransacked and estroyed the monasteries, and drove the monks from the site. In 2006, Singapore, China,India,Japan , and other nations, announced a plan to restore and revive the ancient site as the Nalanda International University

    Nalanda was one of the first great universities in recorded history..Nalanda is a familiar name that comes up in history class but, unfortunately class but, unfortunately, its importance is narrated in the past tense. The hiostory of Nalanda, the ancient university town of Bihar, goes back to the day of Buddha and Mahavira in the Sixth Century B.C. There are many versions  of what the term"Nalanda" means. Nalam is said to be lotus  and da, to give. As the Lotus  is a symbolic representation of knowledge, the word means a giver of knowledge. It has been documented that the Buddha often stayed at Nalanda university was started during the Gupta period( Fifth Century AD)
  Former President APJ Abdul Kalam has explained how he came to think of the concept of a unique institution in Nalanda". He called it a project designed for a unity of minds in the 21st century that would draw inspiration form the rich and historical traditions of Nalanda, Bodha Gaya, where Buddha got enlightenment,and other spiritual centres in Bihar.
Parliament has approved the Nalanda University Bill 2010 which ensures that the Nalanda University is to be set up at an approximate cost of Rs. 1,0005 crore. A project office for the university has been set up in new delhi. The university is to have Schools of Buddhist studies, Philosophy and comparative Religious, Historical Studies, International Relations and Peace Studies, Business Management in connection with development studies; Languages and Literature, and Ecology and Environment Studies.
  The campus is to be spread across about 1,000 acres (500 acres at Rajgir, near the site of the original university, and 500  acres were the new one is to come up. It is to have students and scholars from across the world.It will also associate itself with some 200 villages in its vicinity. There is a Nalanda Mentor Group under the chairmanship of Nobel laureate Prof. Amartys Sen.It has representatives from Singapore, China, Japan and Thailand who will help in running and governing the university.
   Apart from India, It will get funding from Singapore, Thailand and Australia. Singapore has indicated that it is willing to provide funds for the library. Prof. Amartya Sen has said that Nalanda ( the first one) was unique as it is  the only educational institution outside China where the Chinese had gone for studies before the 17th Century.
