A 79-year-old man was saved by some courageous children playing on the courtyard when he was trapped in the Kallada river, Punalur.. The incident occurred at 3.30 pm on 16th August,2011, in the Muhurthikavu temple kadavu near Punalur railway overbridge. Thankappan from Vattappara, Thiruvananthapuram, was saved by 6 children. They were Shamna, 10, Unni, 13, Alif, 9, Kannan, 13, Alfiya, 12 and Shamnad, 13.Thankappan was trapped in the heavy current and Shamna who was playing on the courtyard saw him. When she informed this to her friend Alfiya, they thought he would be bathing. But Thankappan cried out for help and the girls informed the same to their other friends. They were in confusion due to the the heavy current in the river. One of them rushed back to inform the elders. They spotted ivy gourd climber (Kovalvalli) and dropped the same to the old man. Thankappan managed to grab the climber and all the children pulled him out of the water. Thankappan reached Punnalur to meet one of his friends. Added to his dismay, when he reached the shore he found his dress and his purse missing. Later the children managed to collect some money and gave him. Alfiya, Shamnad, Alif and Shamna were on Ramadan fasting when they saved the old man
