ALCOHOLISM,SUICIDE- PSYCHO SOCIAL PROBLEMS
Alcoholism and Suicide are two psycho social problems which need immediate attention of psychiatrists, health professionals, and the government. Dr Mohan Isaac ,professor of psychiatry at the university of western Australia delivering a lecture on " future of psychiatry. Dr Isaac said that with the discovery of the first anti psychotic drug chlorpromazine in 1952, psychiatry witnessed tremendous development during the past six decades.
This was followed by the discovery of anti depressants and many new drugs with fewer side effects. New technologies such as MRI and PET scans allowed medical scientists to peep in to the living brain. Molecular biology and molecular genetics would provide newer insights in to field of psychiatry. blurring of boundries between psychiatry and neurology,use of technology in psychiatry, and computer aided psycho therapy were the areas that needed special emphasis from the research point of view.
An acute shortage of psychiatrists was a major problem facing India and the rest of the world. A recent study showed that Kerala had only 300 psychiatrists, while the whole country had just 4,000. Dr Isaac called upon the medical doctors to take up the specially of psychiatry as it got a bright future social psychiatry and person centred psychiatry offered new avenues.
