HYDERABAD: Five students of Government Primary School Maisaram, in Barkas were injured when the asbestos sheet ceiling of their classroom caved in when they were busy writing their last unit test on Wednesday morning. The incident, which occurred at around 9.45 am, left one student with severe head injuries. Authorities said that an under-construction portion of a wall from the adjacent high school building on the same premises collapsed on the asbestos sheet leading to the mishap. The victims were class V students and three of them have been admitted to a private hospital in Santoshnagar.

When the asbestos sheet came crashing down the frightened students ran out of the classroom. Several locals joined teachers and rushed the injured girls to the nearby community hospital in Barkas where they were given first aid. The hospital authorities said one of the injured students, Juveria, sustained serious head injuries which needed suturing. Among the other students who were injured were Farzana and Shaheen Begum who were admitted to a private hospital. Two others were given first aid. A total of 46 girls were writing the test when the mishap occurred.
Anxious parents of the students rushed to the spot after an announcement was made in the nearby mosque about the mishap. Reacting to the incident, the enraged locals held a demonstration against the school management and the contractor carrying out the construction work.
