The Doctor's Day is celebrated on July 1 all across India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was born on July 1, 1882 and passed away on the same date in 1962, aged 80 years. Doctor Roy was honoured with the highest civilian honour of Bharat Ratna in 1961. However, the day will be observed as Black Day and doctors will hold a march from Gumar Mandi to protest against the Clinical Establishment Bill. The decision was taken by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Ludhiana.  According to the association, the government took the decision unilaterally, completely ignoring the problems of medical fraternity. The members said it will lead to tremendous increase in the cost of treatment due to expenses needed to fulfill the provisions of the Bill.

Every year Doctor’s Day is celebrated in India on the 1st of July. This observance fulfills a need to show the doctors and physicians in our lives how important they are to us and how invaluable their treatments are that cure us. The celebrations are indicative of the respect that they command in the lives of their patients and thus obligate them to fulfill their responsibilities as well.
First of July has been designated as Doctors’ Day in India. It is surprising to know how few people are aware of this. A random survey amongst the people around us, including doctors, will confirm this. Hence to expect people to know the significance of Doctors’ Day would be unrealistic. It is indeed important that both doctors and patients be made aware of the existence of this day and at the same time, of its relevance and significance in the larger context of healthcare in this country.
Is first of July designated as Doctors’ Day all over the world? No, it is Doctors’ day only in India. For example, in the US, Doctors’ Day is on 30th March every year. The need to acknowledge the contributions made by doctors was first felt by Eudora Brown Almond. She was the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond and hailed from Georgia, USA. It was observed on March 30th 1930 for the first time in USA. At the time apart from mailing greeting cads to physicians and doctors flowers were also laid in the graves of deceased doctors. There was a reason behind the adoption of March 30th as the suitable date to celebrate as Doctor’s Day. On this day the famous doctor from Georgia, Dr. Crawford W. Long had used ether anesthesia in surgery for the first time. This day was therefore found appropriate to honor members of this profession. Doctor’s Day celebrations – Doctor’s Day celebrations do not signify celebrations of revelry or social extravaganzas. It is celebrated in a very solemn and quiet manner. Stressing more on the need for acknowledgement of the significant contribution made by doctors in our lives they are greeted with cards. There are common forums arranged where groups from the medical profession are invited to share their experiences. Following this they are honored for their specific contributions to the growth of medical science and patient recovery.

Doctor’s Day is celebrated in India on the 1st of July every year. This day has been chosen as a mark of respect to the contributions made by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who left an indelible mark in the history of medical profession in India. July 1st was his birthday as well as his death anniversary in the year 1882 and 1962 respectively. There are several ways that this ay is observed.
