World Environment Day
(June 5)
World Environment Day, abbreviated to WED, is a global celebration of positive environmental action. The UN-promoted event began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main ways in which the organization draws attention to environmental issues around the world. The theme for 2011 is Forests: Nature at Your Service - a theme which encompasses the issues of deforestation and the need to protect green spaces. India is the host country for the 2011 event, and organizers expect this year's event to be the most widely celebrated so far. Earlier in the year global environmental campaigns Earth Hour on March 26 and Earth Day on April 22 also aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues around the world.
