        This year's Mahakavi P. Memorial Award will be bestowed on poet Ettumanur Somadasan for his collection of poems titled ‘Jala Samadhi.' Announcing the award at a press conference here on Sunday, social critic Sukumar Azhikode, who headed the three-member award committee, said Mr. Somadasan had combined both classicism and romanticism in Malayalam poetry and gave a space to modernity in his poetry.He said the award committee evaluated the poet's special features, including his language, metre, and rhythm.

      The award, instituted by the P. Smaraka Trust in 1997, includes a cash prize of Rs.20,000 and a citation. Trust chairman Prof. Azhikode would give away the award at a function to be held in Sharjah on July 15. The function would be held in association with the Indian Association there. Prof. Azhikode would present a special award to Iyyankode Sreedharan for his biography of Mahakavi P. titled ‘Swapnadanam' at the P. Smaraka Library at Kollankode on June 26.
