KOCHI METRO RAIL PROJECT
The Kerala state government will press the center for implementation of the Kochi Metro Rail Project on Chennai or Bangalore model. A high level conference, convened by Chief Minister Mr Oommen Chandy and attended by E. Sreedharan, chairman of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Union Minister of State for Food and consumer Affairs K.V Thomas, decided that a state delegation should go to the center to press for the model.
The model envisages equity participation of 15 percent each by the center and state government. More than 50 percent of the project cost is to be funded either by Japan's overseas Department Assistance or as loan from Indian financial institutions.
The conference decided to go ahead with the preparatory works, which had been entrusted to the DMRC. The land immediately needed for development of roads and other infrastructure would be acquired with in five weeks. The people to be displaced could be rehabilitated at pulepady. The meeting decided to go for a negotiated purchase of land needed for widening Mahatma Gandhi Road in Kochi, from Madhava Pharmacy to Thevara and,Baberji Road, from Ernakulam town railway over bridge to Madhava pharmacy. Mr Sreedharan told the conference that the DMRC could start work within 10 days of the government making the land and other facilities available. Work could start with rebuilding of the railway over bridge near the town station and construction of a new over bridge near KSRTC bus stand and widening and improvements to Salim Rajan Road and Mullassery canal Road
