KAVIYUR CASE
A CBI court Monday, 2oth June, 2011, directed the agency to conduct further investigation into the case relating to the suicide of a 15-year-old girl and her four family members in September 2004 in their house at Kaviyoor in Pathanamthitta district. Special judge Jose Thomas directed the investigating agency to complete the probe in three months and posted the case for further hearing to October. The court also criticised CBI asking it why investigation had not been carried into whether the girl had been sexually exploited and into a letter written by her friend to a judge on the reason for the family taking the extreme step.
The girl, her 40-year-old father, a temple priest, mother (35), eight-year-old sister and five-year-old brother were found dead inside their house at Kaviyoor on Sept 28 2004. While the father was found hanging, the others had consumed some poisonous substance. The autopsy had revealed the girl had been sexually abused 48 hours before her death. The girl had been promised roles in films and TV serials and taken to various places and exploited, petitioner, T P Nandakumar, Editor of 'Crime magazine' stated in his petition, seeking a further probe. He pointed that CBI had not gone into the letter, purportedly written by her friend to the judge. The Kaviyoor case along with another case of 15-year-old girl being sexually exploited from Killiroor had hit headlines for several months in Kerala as there were reports of some VIP's relatives being involved. The 15-year-old teenager had died soon after giving birth to a girl child.
