. Sabeena told the police that Anshad was assaulted using a belt and a piece of firewood. There are telling tale marks of the brutal treatment on the shoulder and arms of the kid. Anshad told the police that his father beat him up for not writing the first letter of the Malayalam alphabet. But Sabeena said the boy was tutored by his father to say so and that she herself was beaten by Shaji. He had threatened to kill her if she had spoken about it, Sabeena said. The kid was locked up for four days and was assaulted. The incident came to light after one of their neighbours spotted the kid. The police were informed and the mother and son were admitted to a private hospital at Kottiyam. The kid is in the intensive care unit of the hospital. Shaji, who hails from Palathara, is an autorickshaw driver at Mylapore stand.
