KERALA CELEBRATED INDIA'S WORLD CUP VICTORY

Kerala celebrated India's World Cup victory

Wild celebrations broke out in Kerala Saturday 2nd April,2011, night as India won the cricket World Cup, a victory made more special by the presence of local lad Sreesanth in the squad.   Celebrations began at Kochi, the hometown of fast bowler S. Sreesanth, with people setting off firecrackers and shouting slogans praising Team India's win.  'Kerala has produced only two home grown players who have represented the country in international matches - Sreesanth this time, while in 1983, it was Sunil Valson though he was born and brought up outside Kerala. It is not a big deal that Sreesanth was smashed around the park, if that be the case, neither did Sachin (Tendulkar) or (Virender) Sehwag fire this time,' said Mathew George, a Class 12 student and an ardent fan of Sreesanth.

Since the match began, roads became deserted as people young and old were glued to their TV sets. As soon as the winning run was scored, people, mainly youth, took to the streets at many places in the state, whooping their happiness.  'If there is anything to be proud of, it is that we will win the World Cup if there is a Keralite in the team,' said Blessen Thomas, a college student.
