                             HOLY WEEK-2011- MAUNDY THURSDAY OBSERVED

 Christians in the Kerala state observed Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter Sunday) 21th April,2011 to commemorate the institution of Holy Eucharist by Jesus Christ with church services in the evening and night.
  It was at the last supper while celebrating the passover festival with his disciples that Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist.It was also at the Last supper that Jesus washed and kissed the feet of his disciples as an act of humility. The orthodox and Catholics churches of Kerala also commemorated this act with the chief celebrant of the Maundy Thursday mass washing and kissing the feet of 12 lay persons and priests. the faithful take the washing of the feet ritual  as a message of Christs humility and service. Maundy Thursday also symbolizes Christ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. To commemorate this agony night vigils are held in all churches.  The faithful attended the Maundy Thursday rituals in strength not only for the evening mass but even the night vigil services. The way of the cross to commemorate the passion of christ is one of the most important rituals of the Good Friday ceremonies at Orthodox churches. Maundy thursday was observed at various churches with special service on Thursday. Rev. Fr Y.S Geevarghese led the service at Salem St. Geroge Orthodox church Ayppalloor,Kottarakara. Archbishop of Thiruvalla Thomas Mar Coorilos led the service at Sacred Heart Church at Kadamankulam. They Holy communion held at Parumala St. Pauls and St. Peter's Orthodox Church was led by Mathews Mar Theodosus metropolitan.
