KOTTAYAM MUNCIPALITY BANNED ENDOSULFAN
Kottayam Muncipal council banned the sale and use of Endosulfan with in the muncipal area. Chief Minister V. S Achuthanandan's Satyagraha demanding a ban on Endosulfan gained the attention of some of the participants of the conference of parties to the Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants that began in Geneva on Monday,25th April,2011. the members of the Sivagiri math demanded a ban of Endosulfan.
the Democratic youth Federation of India (DYFI) organised a signature campaign in the town on Monday 25th April,2011 to gainer support for its demand that the union government adopt a stand in favour of a global ban on Endosulfan at the conference of parties to the Stockholm convention of persistent organic pollutants being held in Geneva. Purogamana Kala Sahithya Sanghom alleged that the union government had been ignoring the demand from various quarters for a nation wide ban on the killer pesticide.
Youth Congress activists taking out demonstration to the secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday demanding a nation wide ban on Endosulfan.
Left MPs on Tuesday ,26th April,2011 staged a dharna in the parliament House and urged the centre to support the ban a decision already taken by some 80 countries, citing that the united nations had classified endosulfan as a highly dangerous insect killer" and that its aerial spraying caused physical and mental retardation, cancer,infertility, birth disorders, and damage to brain and nerves. the Union government has so far taken a pro- endosulfan stand at the international level.
STOCKHOLM CONVENTION & INDIA
India on Tuesday 26th April, 2011 raised objections relating to the absence of alternatives' and procedural violations' to the recommendation for a global ban on endosulfan at the conference of parties to the Stockholm Convention meeting in Geneva. India had said that the health and environmental effects of endosulfan were not established in a draft circulated in the Asia Pacific Group, India had circulated a draft in the Asia Pacific Group seeking postponement of a decision on Endosulfan to the next conference of parties.However, this was opposed by Gulf countries such as Bahrain, Qutar, and Oman who pointed out that they had already banned endosulfan in their countries.India, however, has not with drawn the draft.
Many developing countries such as Indonesia, and Uganda besides India, raised the need for financial and technical assistance and access to technology to replace endosulfan with alternatives. Switzerland stressed that alternatives were available and that it was wiling to discuss assistance for replacement of endosulfan in developing countries. China felt that the procedural issues raised at the meeting should be corrected.
