ENDOSULFAN- ANTI ENDOSULFAN DAY

                                                  ANTI-ENDOSULFAN DAY

As Kerala observed' Anti-Endosulfan Day" on Monday,25th April,2011. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the States leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President Ramesh Chennithala that the centre would consolidate opinions from various states before deciding on the requests for a nationwide ban on the pesticide.
Dr Singh told the two leaders who met him, that the request for had come only from Kerala and Karnataka. The central government would wait for the final report of the Indian council for medical Research, which was studying the causes of Endossssssulfan, before considering the request, he told them. the Prime Minister told the delegation that he would visit Kasaragod district, which has the most number of suspected vivtims of the pesticide, when he came to kerala next time.

Members of the CPI(M)'s students Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation( DYFI) staged a protest demanding ban on Endosulfan. The activists demanded that a tribunal be set up to ensure suitable compensation to the victims of Endosulfan in Karnataka and Kerala. Endosulfan is a neurotoxin, a carcinigen and an endocrine disruptor.
It is a shame on our country with a noble, rich and elegant tradition to show lackadaisical attitude towards banning the killer pesticide Endosulfan that has been banned in 80 countries across the globe. As per the Insecticides Act, 1968, the state government could not impose ban on a pesticide or insecticide and hence the union government should take the initiative. Minister Mullkara Ratnakaran said. The Minister has called for united efforts by all parties, above  all their political difference in pressurizing the union government to impose a total ban on Endosulfan ever after witnessing its worst effects on human health and environment was nothing but cruelty. The minister called upon the union government to take stern stand favouring a global ban on Endosulfan at the Stockholm convention that began in Geneva on Monday, 25th April,2011. He said even countries like Australia had banned of the hazarduous impacts of killer pesticide on the human population in the affected areas of Kasaragod. Kerla should stand united in its demand for a total ban on Endosulfan.
Chief Minister V.S Achuthanandan under took a fast demanding an all- India ban on Endosulfan, a writ petition was filed on Monday, 25th April, 2011 seeking a directive to the center to impose such a ban. The petitioner said several studeies had documented that Endosulfan could also affecte human development. Researchers studying children from  an isolated village in Kasaragod district,Kerla,India have linked Endosulfan exposure to delays in sexual maturity among boys, Endosulfan is an off- patent organochlorine insecticide and acaricide. This colourless solid has emerged as a highly controversial agrochemical due to its acute toxicity, potential for bioaccumulation, and role as an endocrine disruptor" Endosulfan was the only pesticide applied to cashew plantation in the hills for 20 years and had contaminated the village environment.
All -party delegation from kerala had met Prime minister Manmohan Singh demanding a ban on sale and production of the potentially and perpetually harmful pesticide Endosulfan allover India but so far nothing had been done.
The present writ petition seeking directive to the centre to prohibit the sale of Endosulfan in its preent form or any other derivatives in the market through out India, direct all the sates to explain their stands towards such a ban. direct the centre to provide appropriate and sufficient rehabilitation facilities to the victims effected by the application  and use of Endosulfan, and direct the centre to identify the manufactures of Endosulfan in India and compensate the family of the victims who succumbed to death and to all those who were affected by the use of Endosulfan
