CARDINAL VARKY VITHAYATHIL


Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil

          Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil, the Major Archbishop of Syro Malabar Catholic church, who passed away  , Friday 1st April,2011  will be laid to rest on Sunday evening,10th April,2011. The ceremony will be held at St. Mary's Basilica  in Kochi at 5.30 p.m.  The cardinal will be laid to rest alongside his predecessors at the sanctum of St Mary's Cathedral Basilica, archdiocesan cathedral of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly.

       The body of the cardinal will be at Angamaly Basilica Church for the public to pay their last respects. The funeral rites will begin with a mass at 2.30 pm on Sunday. The mass will be followed by a funeral procession, starting from high court junction.  Varkey Vithayathil passed away at Kochi's Lisi Hospital. He was 84.He was ailing for some period due to heart disease.
He is serving as Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly and head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. He is also a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. His Holiness Pope John Paul II nominated Mar Varkey Vithayathil a member of the College of Cardinals on 21st January 2001.

       Church spokesperson Father Paul Thelekkat said the cardinal fell down unconscious at 10 a.m. while conducting the mass.   'He was rushed to a hospital. Despite the doctors' best efforts, he breathed his last at 2 p.m.,' said Thelekkat. 'Since all our bishops are away meeting the Pope, which happens once in five years, the body would be kept in the mortuary. The date of the funeral will be announced later,' added Thelekkat.  With assembly elections just weeks away and the church having considerable clout, many candidates from across the state have started rushing here to pay their last respects to the departed cardinal. Among those who paid their last respects was Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Prakash Karat.

        Born on 29th May 1927 of Thresiamma and Justice Joseph Vithayathil, Archbishop Varkey Vithayathil had his school education at North Parur and Thiruvanathapuram and his college education at University College Thiruvanathapuram, and St. Joseph College, Trichy. In 1955 he went to Rome for his studies in common law from where he took his doctorate in 1959 on 'The Origin and Progress of the Syro-Malabar Hierarchy'. He participated in the funeral rites for Pope John Paul II and in the conclave which elected Pope Benedict XVI.His body would be laid to rest at St Marys Baselica, Kochi after one week.

    Kurakar Garden Cultural Forum conducted a condolence meeting at Karckom Kurakar Center on 11th April at 10 am.  Prof. John Kurakar presided. Mr. Sam Kurakar, Mr Bobby Kurakar, Prof Varghese John, Dr Balakrishnan Nair, Mr D. Unnikrishnan, Mr Manu Kurakar were spoke on the occasion
