WORLD SPARROW DAY- MARCH 20

                                          WORLD SPARROW DAY- MARCH- 20

March 20 is observed as world Sparrow Day. Why a sparrow Day? Because the number of sparrow is fast dwindling and we human need to do some thing drastic rethinking about our lifestyle and the environment to save these little birds. It is also an opportunity to bring together all bird lovers, so that we can find ways to conserve endangered and exotic wild life. The theme for this year is" hirp for the sparrow, Tweet for the sparrow".

The house sparrow ( passerdomesticus) is a species of passerine bird of  the sparrow family passeridae. It has featheres moferent shades of brown and grey. They are to feed on food grains and worms. Theyare doting parents and both male and the female take care of their chicks. In India,it is popularly known as goraiya in Hindi. In TamilNadu and Kerala it is known as Kuruvi. In Telugu it is known as the Pichhuka and in Kannada, gubbachchi. The Gujarat is call it Chakali. It is known as Chiri in Punjab. Chaer in Jammu & Kashmir Charai pakhi in west Bengal and gharachetia in orissa. In urdu it is called chirya while in sindhi, it is known as jhirki.
Humans and their life style changed. Rice and other grain were now bought in shops. polished and packed and ready to be cooked. Gardens vanished, along with it, disappeared worms and insects that were part of the birds diet, especially the chicks diet. The disappearance of old fashioned houses with caves, cosy little niches and nooks and corners for the birds to build their untidy nests has now given way to sleek and smooth buildings that don't offer any hospitality to the house sparrows to their habitat.
A more lethal reason is the chemicals used in urban and also in neo agrarian set up. The introduction of unleaded petrol is one, as the combustion of which is highly toxic for insects that form a vital part of a chicks diet.Young birds can not thrive with out their accustomed food and decline become move severe.
The recent threat to the birds comes in the form of emissions sent out from mobile towers. These affect insects and the hatching of birds eggs.
People should come together and form action groups to help conserve these beautiful creatures. People must opt for organic repellents and pesticides as it will be a major step to preserve the natural world

we can help to pretect sparrows by:
Sprinkle grain on the verandah/terrace of your house.

If you have even a little space around your house, try to make a home/kitchen garden.

Feed platforms might help the welcome birds back.

Clean water can be kept.

Pots with straw can be hung as nesting sites.

Lead environmentally healthy lives so that birds too can survive.

Say no to pesticides in your homes. Use organic repellents.
