Tribute paid to veteran Communist leader G. Janardhana Kurup
Senior criminal lawyer and veteran communist leader G. Janardhana Kurup passed away at his residence in Kochi on Friday 23 rd March,2011. He was 91. He is survived by five daughters. Cremation will take place on Saturday.
Born in Kollam on June 8,1920, he had his education at Govt. Arts College and University College, Thiruvananthapuram, American College, Madhrai, and Ernakulam Government Law college. He had participated in the freedom struggle and also made his presence felt in the literary and cultural fields during his college days. He was one of the founders of the Kerala People's Arts Club (KPAC), a theater movement which popularized communist ideology among the common people in the state in the 1950s.
He had also acted and sung in the plays staged by the KPAC from 1952 to 59.Beginning his legal pratice at Kollam in 1959, he had worked as senior government pleader in the High court, prosecutor and special public prosecutor for various cases ,including the Suryaneli rape case.
He had also unsuccessfully contested from Karunagappally Assembly constituency in 1957 and Kollam Loksabha constituency in 1970. Mr Kurup won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award for his autobiography, Ente Jeevitham (My Life) in 2007.
