Oldest Church in the Thiruvananthapuram City
The history of CSI chirst church in Thiruvananthapuram through 150 years (1859-2009) traces the orgins of the church from the days of British Anglican's to the institution's sesquicentennial celebrations in 2008-09.
According to Daniel George, presbyter in-charge, the churches congregation was formed in 1823 and the building was set up in 1859. From the very beginning, the institution was maintained civil church which meant that the ownership of the church vested with British crown. Money for the maintenance of the church came from the state treasury. The land of the church was granted free of tax by the Maharaja also contributed to the construction of building and the prince of Travancore was present at the foundation stone-laying by General Cullen, the Resident, in 1858. The church was dedicated after the name Christ Church by the Bishop of Madras on November 15,1859.
An Indian congregation was formed in 1837. worship in Malayalam started in 1874, Even no, the services in English, Tamil and Malayalam continue. The earliest tomp in the church dates back to 1814.Now, the church has about a thousand families on its rolls and the total membership comes to more than five thousand.Bringing out the history of the church was one of the projects of the sesquicentennial celebration
