Indefinite economic blockade
Imposed in Manipur
The All-Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) imposed an indefinite economic blockade on the State and the national highways from Thursday ,24th March,2011.This is in protest against the government's alleged failure to maintain reservation quota for tribals in appointments and transfers in various offices. The ATSUM is not happy with the slow moving construction works of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Manipur. As a result of the blockade, no truck plied on the roads on Friday, 25th March.Consequently, and prices of essential commodities went up.
Official sources said that arrangements are being made to escort the trucks by the paramilitary personnel along the NH 39 for fetching essential items from Assam. Last year, the tribal organisations imposed a crippling blockade against Manipur for 113 days from April 11, 2010 making various demands. This followed the refusal by the Manipur government to allow the rebel leader Thuingaleng Muivah of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) to enter Manipur.( From “The Hindu”)
