ARUNA'S STORY

Aruna’s story
Aruna Shanbag brain dead applies to SC for mercy killing but Supreme Court can’t allow to die
Aruna Shanbaug now 62 years old women, a nurse in Mumbai brain dead since she was attacked by a rapist in November 1973.Plea has been made by a journalist Pinki Virani to SC for mercy killing, who suffered a brutal sexual assault 36 years ago and has been lying in a vegetative state in a Mumbai hospital, who first broke the story of her sexual assault, decided to move a mercy plea before the apex court with an aim to end Aruna’s suffering. But  the Supreme court today said that under the country’s law, they cannot allow a person to die.
Aruna Shanbaug was then 24 years old and working as a nurse at Mumbai’s King Edward Memorial (KEM) hospital, when she was raped by a ward boy Sohanlal Walmiki. The ward boy forced sex on her in an act of vengeance after Aruna threatened him that she would report his stealing of milk meant for patients to hospital authorities.During the trial, the prosecution could not prove the rape charges, so Sohanlal was let off after six years of imprisonment for robbery.
