102 persons killed and several others injured on Fridat ,15th January,2011 at Pulmedu track near Sabarimala Sannidhanam. The reason to the accident was stampede. The main reason is that the authorities cannot judge the crowd pouring in on a particular day. More over, Pulmedu is a forest route which very poor infrastructure.
Each sabarimala pilgrimage season brings crores of rupees get to the kerala government. The pilgrims would expect are basic amenities and safety arrangements. This is not the first time that a stampede has taken place in Sabarimala. Similar tragedies have taken place in the past including 1999.
The pilgrimage season to Sabarimala be extended. the temple open for as many as 10 or 8 months will help mitigate the rush during the Mandalam and Maharam. A month after every five or four months , it can remain closed for two or four months a year. this will give the devotees more options to plan their annual pilgrimage
