Kerala Chief Minister Mr V.S Achuthanandan inaugurated the Malayalam Bhasha Sammelenam organized by the Kerala State Library Council on Thursday 27th January, 2011 at Kollam. Chief Minister expressed hope that Malayalam will be bestowed with the classical language status by the next kerala piravi day. He said out of the four importance languages of south India, three had been accorded the classical language status and only Malayalam had been let out.
A report showing the heritage and qualification of Malayalam to earn the classical Language status has been submitted to the Prime Minister. He said compared to the other three Dravidian languages Malayalam lacks in research and scientific study. In fact ,Kerala is the only state in south India having no university exclusively for research and scientific study of mother tongue.he demanded efforts to protect the Mother tongue." It is a matter of shame that our Mother tongue is not treated as the first language not only at educational institutions but also by the examinations boards of the state. In no other states or country will the mother tongue face such a fate. The system is such that a student can pass the school final with out studying the other tongue. The function was presided over by president of the state Library council P.K Harikumar. Writer Sara Joseph delivered the keynote address.
