ENDOSULFAN VICTIMS SEMINAR
The state Human Rights Commission will host a seminar on November 29, 2010 involving all family members suffering from trauma of serious health hazards suspected to have been caused due to prolonged exposure to Endosulfan pesticide in the cashew estates of the plantation corporation of Kerala (PCK) in the Kasaragod district. The seminar will look in to grievances and suggestions from the affected residing in 11 panchayat limits and hear the PCK authorities before submitting a report to the government. ENDOSULFAN SPRAYED ON CARDAMON The environmentalist demanded a nationwide ban on the pesticide, especially in the Cardamom sector. Environmentalist said the pesticide was brought in by estate laborers who arrived in jeeps from Tamil Nadu. Studies conducted in Vandanmedu and Mali areas, the main cardamom cultivating places, had revealed the ill effects of the pesticide. The official studies conducted some years ago in Kanchiyar had warned about the risk involved as a large number of people suffered from diseases and mental and physical deformities. I have read number of press reports on the Endosulfan victims but none of them have been able to create a clear idea of the situation at kasargod. Like some reports mention it as a result of aerial spraying while a number of them have not been clear about the cause of the issue. I have even done my bit of research on the net and all i have been able to trace are just media reports. Are there any other proofs to substantiate this issue??
