CAMPAIGN TO MAKE
SABARIMALA PLASTIC FREE
Kerala is intensifying its campaign for a plastic free Sabarimala pilgrimage across the southern states, which account for the majority of devotees undertaking the annual visit to the hill shrine.
Launching an awareness campaign in Hydra bad against the use of plastic that has been wreaking ecological havoc in the hills. Kerala’s Forest Minister Binoy viswom led a team of officials to chennai to sensitize pilgrims to the importance of avoiding use of plastic.
Pointing out that every year about 350 metric tonnes of plastic, 2000 mt of organic food waste and 550 mt of paper and other types of discards accumlated in Dabarimala during the pilgrimage season.
The plastic junk was not only damaging the ecology of Sabarimala and the Pamba river but also causing deaths of wild animals that consummed the non- biodegradable materials.
