National Postal Week –October 9-15
Each day of this week is celebrated as world postal day, Savings Bank Day, Business Development Day,Mail Day, Philately Day and Postal Life Insurance Day.
The purpose is to create an awarness of the role the postal sector plays in our life and in business and its contribution to the social and economic development of the countries. A number of programmes like letter writing, seminars, exhibitions and so on are held during this week.
The postal day marks the anniversary of the establishment of the universal postal union(UPU) in 1874 in the swiss capital. Bern. It was declared’world post Day’ by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Its observance is to create an awarness of the role of the postal sector in our life and in business and its economic development of countries celebrate the day as working holiday. Introduce new products and services and even giveaway awards to staff.
On October 9,1874,the Treaty of Bern, establishing the General Postal Union. Its name was changed to the Uni versal Postal Union in 1878.
India has the largest postal net work but which is not as mechanised as in the U.S. We have 1,55,333 post offices. China has 70,000 and the U.S has 40,000.
