Foreign secretary Nirupama Rao on Tuesday 31sma Rao on Tuesday 31st August,2010,visited Vavuniaya,Kilinochchi and Jaffna for a first hand assessment of the Indian assistance and the situation of the re settled tamils.
The visit is taking place against the back drop of concerns in India over the pace of resettlement of nearly three lakh Tamils displaced in the conflict between the Sri Lankan Security forces and the LTTE.
India is engaged in massive relief and rehabilitation of the displaced Tamils and in demining operations in the erstwhille conflict areas. Prime minister Manmohan Singh had announced Rs 500 crore humanitarian assistance. New Delhi committed to build 50,000 houses for the displaced. The Foreign secretary also met the recently re settled familes in the Killinochchi area and Jaffna. She was given apublic reception at Jaffna public Library.
