TRIBUTE TO FILM DIRECTOR AZIZ

Film Director Aziz (P.M Abdul Aziz) died on Saturday 17th April,2010. He was 75. An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), pune,he had directed the feature film, Aval,Njaval, Koodram Panithavar and Manpeda
He was of the first FTII graduate to direct a feature film. Aval, made in 1967, featured Madhu, Adoor Bhasi, K.P Ummer, Bahadur and Usha Nandini scripted by Thoppil Bhasi,the film had songs written by Vayalar Rama Varma and scored by G. Devarajan.
Aziz had entered the malayalam film industry, armed with an understanding of serious cinema instilled in him by the film school. Aval was a film about' sexual impotence divorce and a social system ridded with incestuous relationships. Aziz then concentrated on making documentaries. He produced and directed 37 of them.
He started his career as a school teacher. His interest in art and culture made him leave his job and plunge in to theater. Chaverppada written by him, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1973. Stalwarts G. Sankara- Pilai and S. Ramanujam has associated with Aziz. When the play was staged in Trissur in the 1970's,Premji and Mullaanezhi had acted in it. The play was staged at the national theater festival in 1975. he directed TV productions.
He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. Kerala Chalachitra Academy chairman remembered Aziz was one of the first directors in the state to be formally trained in a film school
