COPENHAGEN CLIMATE SUMMIT
China announces target to limit gas emissions. Carbon intensity to be cut to 40-45 percent of 2005 levels by 2020. U.S proposes 17 percent reduction below 2005 levels by 2020.
China will reduce its carbon intensity or carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP, to 40-45 percent of 2005 levels by 2020. China's cabinet declared in Thursday 27th November, 2009. It was also announced that Chinese premier wen Jiabao will attend the climate summit on December.
The announcement comes a day after the united states proposed a 17 percent reduction in emissions below 2005 levels by 2020.
The developing countries like Brazil, Indonesia and india have made positive announcement in recent weeks. U.S president Barak Obama will attend crucial negotiations in Copenhagen where he will promise sizable reductions in U.S carbon emissions, giving new hope for a global deal on reducing green house gases.
It was essential that all countries do what is necessary to reach a strong operational agreement that will confront the threat of climate change.
