ONAM FEAST FOR
MARUTIMALA MONKEYS
Marutimala Monkeys enjoyed an Uthradam lunch on Tuesday 1st September 2009 served by environmental activists under the banner of the Marutimala samrakashna samithy. This is the ninth consecutive year that the samithy is hosting such a lunch for the monkey’s. The lunch, set on the hilltop, comprised the traditional dishes,. After serving the lunch on 17 banana leaves, the hosts moved away so that the primates could enjoy the feast with out fear.
The leader of the Monkey came forward initially. He tested the meal and on being convinced that every thing was okay gave the signal for the others to have their fill.
The government set up the states first Grama Haritha Samithy there under the Forest Department to protect the hillock as an eco-tourism centre.
More than 40 acres of hillock come under the management of the samithy with eco-tourism getting attached to the hillock there is a steady flow of tourists too. They also feed the monkeys.
