KERALA ASSEMBLY SEEKS NEW DAM
The Assembly has unanimously appealed to the central government to support kerala in its attempt to construct new dam to replace the 113 year old mullaperiyar dam to ensure water for the farmers of Tamil Nadu and safety for the people of the state.
Assembly on Friday 24th July 2009 adopted a substantive resolution expressing serious concern about the potential threat to the lives of some 34 lakh people living in four districts from the dam and recalling mutual agreement between Tamil Nadu and kerala in 1979 on constructing a new dam on the basis of a study conducted by the central water commission (CWC). The Centre must take the initiate to create conditions that would help in the construction of a new dam that would, in turn, ensure water for Tamil Nadu and safety for the people in the four districts of kerala, the resolution said.
The opposition benches were unanimous in their view that while the state must do every thing possible to get a favorable verdict from supreme court. Leader of the opposition Oommen chandi stood up first to support the government resolution
