At least 300 people died when a powerful earthquake in Italion town of L'Aquila on monday 6th April 2009 measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale. It made several thousand people homeless. It destroyed ancient buildings and monuments and Baroque architecure dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Rescue worked through the night to free survivors trapped under the debris.
The quake had a magnitude of 6.3 according to the Italian geophysical institute. thousnts of the 60'ooo residents fled in to the streets as more than a dozen aftershoks rattled the town
