National Sports Day in India is celebrated annually on August 29 to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand,His extraordinary contribution to Indian hockey earned him the title "The Wizard of Hockey." The day also encourages people of all ages to embrace sports and physical activity as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.The official theme for National Sports Day 2026 has not yet been announced by the Government of India.Every year, the celebration highlights the importance of
sports, physical fitness, youth participation, and building a healthier nation
through active living. Once announced, the 2026 theme is expected to emphasize
fitness, inclusivity, and sporting excellence.During his illustrious career,
Dhyan Chand led India to three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936,
bringing global recognition to Indian hockey through his exceptional skill and
sportsmanship.On this day, the President of India presents prestigious sporting
honours such as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Awards,
Dronacharya Awards, and Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award to outstanding
athletes and coaches.
National Sports Day serves as a reminder that sports are
essential not only for competitive success but also for leading a healthier and
more active life.
