SNAKE ATTACK IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Yorkshire terrier, named Spike, found a
deadly cobra in a back garden in South Africa and attacked it before it reached
his owner Louise Grobler.The ten-year-old family dog killed the snake just
a few feet away from the mum-of-four, but was bitten in the mouth.Spike half an
hour later - along with another dog that was also bitten - and now Louise, 42,
is paying tribute to her companion, saying his heroic actions saved her life. Within
an hour of Spike's death, Louise's mixed breed two-year-old, named Prinses,
died after being bitten on the leg. Louise, from Pretoria, noticed Spike was holding something in
his mouth and after taking a closer look she realised it was in fact a snake.
She added: "It's
weird that the snake was in my garden, because they tend to hibernate at this
time of the year."But our neighbours were moving rocks, so I think the
snake got frightened and came into our yard."As soon as I realised what
was happening, I ran next door to get my neighbour for help, but when I got
back Spike had already killed the cobra."Without seeing that Spike had
been bitten, Louise brought her dog inside after noticing he looked unwell.But
Louise and her 18-year-old daughter, Mariska, assumed he would survive as he
was eating and drinking in the moments after the May 12 incident.Louise said:
"Mariska adopted Spike from the side of the road in East Lynne when he was
just one-year-old, so all of my children have grown up with him."Mariska
was heartbroken and cried for days."One of my other dogs sat by him while
he was dying, and kept crying when she realised what had happened." She added: "Spike was very playful, he loved to
play ball, we used to play ball every day and once he started he couldn't stop.
നായകളെ വീട് കാക്കാന്‍ മാത്രമായി വളര്‍ത്തേണ്ട. സ്വന്തം മക്കളെ പോലെ ഓമനിച്ചു വളര്‍ത്തിയാല്‍ അതു തിരിച്ചു നല്‍കുന്നത് അളവറ്റ സ്‌നേഹമായിരിക്കും. എന്ത് ആപത്തിനും നമുക്ക് കൂട്ടായും അവരുണ്ടാകും. ഇതിനു ഉത്തമ ഉദാഹരണമാണ് ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിലെ യോര്‍ക്ക്‌ഷെയറിലുള്ള ടെറിയറിലാണ് സ്‌പൈക്ക് എന്ന നായ തന്റെ ഉടമയെ സ്വന്തം ജീവന്‍ നല്‍കി മരണത്തില്‍ നിന്നു രക്ഷിച്ചത്. വീടിനു മുന്‍വശത്തുള്ള തോട്ടത്തില്‍ ഉടമയായ ലൂസിക്കൊപ്പം നടക്കാനിറങ്ങിയതായിരുന്നു സ്‌പൈക്ക്. ഇതിനിടിലാണ്. ഉടമയെ ആക്രമിക്കാനെത്തിയ മൂര്‍ഖന്‍ പാമ്പിനെ സ്‌പൈക്ക് കീഴ്‌പ്പെടുത്തിയത്. പോരാട്ടത്തിനിടയില്‍ വായില്‍ കടിയേറ്റതാണ് സ്‌പൈക്ക മരണത്തിനു കീഴടങ്ങിയത്. സ്‌പൈക്കിനൊപ്പം പാമ്പിന്റെ കടിയേറ്റ് 2 വയസ്സുള്ള നായ പ്രിന്‍സസും ജീവന്‍ വെടിഞ്ഞു.
സ്‌പൈക്ക് പാമ്പിനെ നേരിട്ടില്ലായിരുന്നുവെങ്കില്‍ തനിക്ക് കടിയേല്‍ക്കാനുള്ള സാധ്യതയുണ്ടായരുന്നെന്ന് ഉടമയായ ലൂസിയും പറയുന്നു. ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയില്‍ ശൈത്യകാലമായതിനാല്‍ പാമ്പുകള്‍ ദീര്‍ഘകാല ഉറക്കത്തില്‍ കഴിയേണ്ട സമയമാണിത്. അയല്‍ക്കാര്‍ അവരുടെ തേട്ടത്തിലെ കല്ലുകള്‍ മാറ്റിയതിനിടെയില്‍ പാമ്പ് ഭയന്ന് തങ്ങളുടെ തോട്ടത്തിലെത്തിയതാകാമെന്നാണ് ലൂസി കരുതുന്നത്. നായ പാമ്പുമായി ഏറ്റുമുട്ടുന്നതു കണ്ട ലൂസി സഹായത്തിനായി അയല്‍ക്കാരെ വിളിച്ചു തോട്ടത്തിലെത്തിയപ്പോഴേക്കും സ്‌പൈക്ക് പാമ്പിനെ കൊന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.
പാമ്പിന്റെ കടിയേറ്റ പ്രിന്‍സസ് എന്ന നായ അപ്പോഴേക്കും തളര്‍ന്നു വീണു. അതേസമയം സ്‌പൈക്ക് കടിയേറ്റതായുള്ള ലക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ ഒന്നും തന്നെ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുകയും വെള്ളം കുടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാല്‍ പ്രിന്‍സസിനേക്കാന്‍ മുന്‍പ് സ്‌പൈക്ക് ജീവന്‍ വെടിഞ്ഞു. കടിയേറ്റ് അര മണിക്കൂറിനുള്ളിലായിരുന്നു സ്‌പൈക്കിന്റെ മരണം. പ്രിന്‍സസിനെ ഇതിനിടെയില്‍ ആശുപത്രിയില്‍ എത്തിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഒരു മണിക്കൂറിനുള്ളില്‍ പ്രിന്‍സസും മരണത്തിനു കീഴടങ്ങി.
ഉടമസ്ഥര്‍ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച സ്‌പൈക്കിനെ 6 വര്‍ഷം മുന്‍പാണ് ലൂസി നായകള്‍ക്കായുള്ള സംരക്ഷണ കേന്ദ്രത്തില്‍ നിന്നു ദത്തെടുക്കുന്നത്. മരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ സ്‌പൈക്കിന് 10 വയസ്സായിരുന്നു. 5 പട്ടികളുള്ള ലൂസിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും ചെറിയ പട്ടിയായിരുന്നു സ്‌പൈക്ക്. സംരക്ഷണത്തിനല്ല ഓമനിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടിയാണ് സ്‌പൈക്കിനെ ലൂസി വളര്‍ത്തിയിരുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ അവശ്യഘട്ടത്തില്‍ സ്‌പൈക്ക് തന്നെ ലൂസിയുടെ ജീവന്‍ രക്ഷിക്കാനായി എത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.
