GROWING DEPOSITS IN BANKS POST DEMONETIZATION MAY
LOWER INTEREST RATES
Large
deposits in bank accounts is expected to soften bond yields and also lower rate
of interest in the economy as banks will be forced to use the extra cash to buy
more government papers and rush to lend money to customers, or do both. With
people unable to spend due to tight liquidity, this could also lead to slower
growth, which would leave enough space for the RBI to cut rates, economists and
bond dealers said.
In the last four days, banks have witnessed aggregate deposits of over Rs 1 lakh crore, most in savings bank accounts and current accounts, which is boosting the CASA deposits of banks. "Surge in deposit in banking system will create more demand for government bonds and other high-rated bonds in an environment of tepid demand for credit. However, at the same time, a reduction in leakages in systemic liquidity will leave almost no scope for OMO purchases in the coming days Soumyajit Niyogi, associate director, credit & market research, India Ratings & Research.
