FURADAN- KERALA BANNED FIVE TOXIC PESTICIDES

Kerala banned
 Five toxic pesticides including Furadan

Kerala has banned Carbofuran one of the most toxic carbamate pesticides marketed under various trade names including Furadan. Carbofuran is banned in Canada and the European Union and is currently being phased out in the US by the   Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The decision to ban Furadan, Phorate and three other extremely toxic pesticides was taken at a high level meeting headed by Agricultural Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran here. Furadan is widely used by farmers for pest-control in banana cultivation. Environmentalists had pointed out that five deadly pesticides - carbofuran, forate, monocrotophos, methyl parathion and metasystox are being indiscriminately used in the state. But it was not immediately clear whether the banned list of pesticides include monocrotophos, methyl parathion and metasystox.
