Militants have killed at least 200 people and wounded scores more at a mosque in Egypt, detonating a bomb and shooting at fleeing worshippers and ambulancesAfter one of the deadliest attacks in the north Sinai region's Islamist insurgency, state media showed images of bloodied victims and bodies covered in blankets inside the Al Rawdah mosque.

No group claimed immediate responsibility for Friday's attack, but since 2014 Egyptian security forces have battled a stubborn Islamic State affiliate in the north of the mainly desert Sinai, where militants have killed hundreds of police and soldiers.

"They were shooting at people as they left the mosque," a local resident whose relatives were at the scene said. "They were shooting at the ambulances too."President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a former armed forces commander who presents himself as a bulwark against Islamist militants, convened an emergency meeting with his defence and interior ministers and intelligence chief soon after the attack. The government also declared three days of mourning.

Arabiya news channel and some local sources said some of the worshippers were sufis who hardliners such as Islamic State regard as apostates because they revere saints and shrines, which for Islamists is tantamount to idolatry.

Militants have mostly targeted security forces in their attacks since bloodshed in the Sinai worsened after 2013 when Sisi, then an armed forces commander, led the overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egyptians gather outside the mosque, which is about 25 miles west of the North Sinai capital of El-Arish But jihadists have also targeted local Sinai tribes that are working with the armed forces, branding them traitors for cooperating with the army and police.In July this year, at least 23 soldiers were killed when suicide car bombs hit two military checkpoints in the Sinai, an attack claimed by Islamic State.Friday's attack happened in Bir al-Abed, west of the city of El ArishMilitants have tried to expand beyond the largely barren, desert Sinai Peninsula into Egypt's heavily populated mainland, hitting Coptic Christian churches and pilgrims.In May, gunmen attacked a Coptic group travelling to a monastery in southern Egypt, killing 29.

തലസ്ഥാന നഗരമായ സീനായില് നിന്ന് 40 കിലോമീറ്റര് മാറി ബിര് അല് അബെദ് നഗരത്തിലുള്ള അല് റവ്ദ പള്ളിയില് വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച നമസ്കാരത്തിനെത്തിയവരാണ് ആക്രമണത്തിനിരയായത്. സുരക്ഷാ സേനയെ പിന്തുണയ്ക്കുന്നവരെ ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടുള്ള ആക്രമണമായിരുന്നുവെന്നാണ് നിഗമനം.

പള്ളിക്കു സമീപം സ്ഫോടനം നടത്തി പരിഭ്രാന്തി സൃഷ്ടിച്ച ശേഷമാണ് ഭീകരര് ആരാധനയ്ക്കെത്തിയവര്ക്ക് നേരെ നിറയൊഴിച്ചത്. .

പ്രസിഡന്റ് അബ്ദുള് ഫത്താ അല് സിസി സസ്ഥിതിഗതികള് വിലയിരുത്താന് ഉന്നതതല യോഗം വിളിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആക്രമണത്തിന്റെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം ആരും ഏറ്റെടുത്തിട്ടില്ല. 2013 മുതല് ഈജിപ്ത് ഭീകരവാദത്തിന്റെ പിടിയിലാണ്. നിരവധി ഭീകരാക്രമണങ്ങള് രാജ്യത്തുടനീളം സംഭവിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.2013 ല് ഇസ്ലാമിസ്റ്റ് നേതാവായിരുന്ന മൊഹമ്മദ് മുര്സിയെ സൈന്യം അട്ടിമറിയിലൂടെ പുറത്താക്കിയതിന് പിന്നാലെയാണ് ഭീകരവാദം ശക്തിപ്പെട്ടത്. ഇസ്ലാമിക് സ്റ്റേറ്റുമായി ബന്ധമുള്ള ഭീകരരാണ് പല ആക്രമണങ്ങള്ക്കും പിന്നിലുള്ളത്. നൂറുകണക്കിന് ആളുകളാണ് ഇതുവരെ ഈജിപ്തില് ഭീകരാക്രമണത്തെ തുടര്ന്ന് കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടത്.
